My project tank I've been dedicating my time to for the past few months has definitely had it's ups and downs.

These weeks are based off of the start of actually adding plants and shrimp to the tank. It had been cycling for a while before all of this.

Week 1:
-Initially I had attempted to make an RCS tank but the 2 shrimp I started with perished after about a week or so which made me switch to some PFRs instead.

-Thought I had an idea of the layout of my tank until a few weeks after it was filled and running. I was just really bothered by the rock in the left side of my tank..it was just far too big and awkward. I felt like I had too many big chunks that it made the tank look crowded.

----------------------------------------------------------

Week 5:
-Took the rock on the left out and bought some DHG to fill in the back / corner.

-Ended up adding a shrimp substrate on top of the previous substrate (Fluval Plant). The Fluval substrate was very large in size and my baby tears / dhg were not staying rooted that well. I figured that adding a thin layer of the smaller size on top would help my plants stay rooted as well as benefit my shrimp.

-Removed my white clouds and stuck them in my community tank.
-Added a black background.
-DIY paintball co2.

----------------------------------------------------------

Week 12:
The tank remained about the same for a few more weeks. HC growing slow but steady and my DHG doing its thing. Eventually, I had a long and exhausting battle with an algae breakout. I was rather disheartened by the poor condition of my tank and was just about give up. However, with some helpful advice I received here, I have been able to almost rid my tank entirely of algae. Small patches still remain but are slowly diminishing.

-Switched my filter to one of the Aquatop in-tank filters with the spray bar attachment. This provided me with the type of waterflow I was looking for. These filters are "Semi" shrimp safe as long as you make sure the sponge inside the filter covers all of the intake openings. I actually had a few shrimp inside my filter because when I added extra media there was a small crack between the sponge and carbon box which allowed baby shrimps to climb in. :doh Luckily when I noticed some of my little ones missing, I popped the filter apart and they all came flying out. They never came near the impeller. Just seemed like they were hanging out inside having a good snack. This time I made sure to pack extra filter floss. There have been no more mishaps afaik.

-Accidentally blew up my diffuser...needle valve on my co2 tank got stuck and I forgot to unplug the tube to my diffuser before I popped it open...:doh Was quite embarrassing when my boyfriend ran into the room to make sure I wasn't hurt and there was water all over the windows..table..and my glasses. Oh well, I didn't like that diffuser anyways. Very poorly made. I went and got new one at Aquatic Warehouse down in SD.

-While at AW I also picked up a nicer looking branch and some red rotala to fill the empty area in the left side of the tank.

It has definitely changed quite a bit since my initial setup, I am just never fully satisfied until I think it is perfect. These last few pictures are very recent. I'm going to see how well the Rotala does an the moss on my branch also has to grow out a bit more. I think I'll try to find another branch to position behind the rock on the right to try and hide my filter and give a little more balance to the scape.

Thank you for looking :oops

I figured it's been so long since I've been "around" that I should re-introduce myself :blos:

It's been over two years since I've had an aquarium set up, and it's driving me NUTS!

In the house I have an empty 18x18x24" zoo-med and an over-full 10g with my three remaining darts in it... I've had this zoo-med empty for about a year I think. We decided that one of the things we've missed the most are shrimp so now I'm trying to decide...
Use the zoo-med for my darts as planned previously and have shrimp and plants in the base (I would create "islands"using pond plant baskets and hydroton) or set the frogs up in a slightly larger tank than the 10g and set up a full proper tank for shrimp and maybe a fish or three...

What do you guys think?

In storage, if I remember correctly I have a 40g breeder, a 15g tall and a bizarre open front tank which is most likely going to get sold. That is 30" x 15" x 30" or so, I forget, it's a fairly shallow square. It has two sliding doors and a water retention style bottom similar to a zoo-med tank.

I suppose, in theory, that I could use the 40g for the frogs and the 15g for shrimp and sell the open fronts.
*sigh* I am so indecisive about tanks, always have been!

So, yeah, hi again folks!

I can't seem to google anyone else but AFA. Or does anyone know if hornwood goes by a different name? Something that ADA didn't coin.

And yes, I know about manzanita looking close and being cheaper but I want some hornwood. Its a much richer brown.

Evening all-

A quick question out to the experts:

I recently purchased an ADA 75P (little over 40 g) and an Eheim 2217...is that filter gonna be too much for the tank? I know, you can never have too much, but will the flow be too strong for the tank? I will be using ADA lilly pipes V-7 (17mm) and P-4 (13 mm). Over the top? The inline heater may slow the flow a little...

Plan on stocking clean up crew (otto's, amano's maybe SAE) GBR's, Rasbo's and either Galaxy Rasbo (Danio) or Rummy's...

--and if anyone has a lead on a good stand, throw it my way!

Hey guys and gals ... I know I haven't been around for a long time. I've just been so busy with life and kids and everything else. I still love my aquarium but it is sadly neglected.

In recent months I noticed a bit of black spot algae and then a bit of algae on the glass so I started turning my CO2 down. Well, about two months ago I broke the glass diffuser and the plastic one I bought to replace it doesn't work. Strangely though, my tank seems just fine. Is there a point where you no longer need it?

Alas, it has come time for a serious rescape. As you can see moss has completely taken over my grass, everything looks pretty terrible. having been out of the loop for so long, any good suggestions? I wish like hell I could just get one of you genius scape people to come over and help me!

Maybe I should wait until after the next meet and get some inspiration ... either way, my poor tank looks rotten.

Just received a phone call from my fiancé that she was vacuuming and saw the snail on the carpet next to my tank. :omg She immediately put it back in the tank, I have no clue of what time it climbed out. When I went to bed last night around 11:45pm, it was still in the tank, towards the bottom.

Obviously this was a possibility, but based off everything I've read, I thought these snails were relatively safe from escaping. :doh
